Brazilian state-owned postal operator Correios do Brasil has reportedly confirmed plans to launch a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) business in the country in the second half of 2013. Online journal Convergencia Digital notes that under the remit of Provisional Measure 532, Correios’ permitted activities have been expanded to include entry to the local telephony market and that whilst no firm date has been decided, it is expected to launch in H2 2013. The postal firm’s intentions were highlighted by communications minister Paulo Bernardo in a recent interview, who said that Correios not only plans to resell capacity and SIM cards from a host network operator, but also that the operator is embarking on a mission to modernise the postal service using the internet. Bernardo went on to say that Correios is keen to move into the electronic realm for postal services and as such, ‘will invest in e-commerce, forming partnerships with retail chains and starting to act as a vehicle for orders, deliveries, logistics and even inventory.’
