Macedonia’s VIP Mobile, part of the Telekom Austria Group, has been awarded radio spectrum for GSM-1800 and IMT-2000 (UMTS) services covering the territory of Macedonia. National regulator the Agency for Electronic Communications (AEC) has reportedly issued VIP with licence authorisations in the 1720MHz-1730MHz (uplink) and 1815MHz-1825MHz (downlink) band, valid for ten years with the option to extend for a further ten. Concurrently, VIP Mobile has been awarded rights to spectrum in the 880MHz-890MHz and 1710MHz-1720MHz (uplink) and 925MHz-935MHz and 1805MHz-1815MHz (downlink) bands for GSM and UMTS services. The cellco intends to launch its 3G network next month and plans to cover all regions of the country with its UMTS signal by end-September.

Earlier this month TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate reported the AEC as saying that VIP Mobile had submitted the ‘best offer’ for the rights to use radio frequencies in the 1720MHz-1730MHz and 1815MHz-1825MHz bands to provide public mobile networks and communication services throughout Macedonia. At the time, the AEC said VIP Mobile offered EUR5.1 million (USD6.3 million) for the respective licences and that it expected to pay for them ‘within ten days of the date of the relevant notification’.
