14 Aug 2012

China’s Huawei has announced that it has been selected by Portuguese mobile operator Optimus to provide UMTS/Long Term Evolution (LTE) multi-frequency antennas for the cellco’s commercial 4G network. The deployment of Huawei’s multi-band (1800MHz/2100MHz/2600MHz) antennas is expected to save on deployment and maintenance costs, and also improve the system throughput, capacity and overall network performance. ‘Huawei antennas showed great performance on existing network tests, which gave us more confidence in LTE network deployment,’ commented Optimus’ CTO Jose Pinto Correia, adding: ‘Optimus is committed to enhancing user experience for mobile broadband, hence Huawei has been our strategic partner in mobile broadband development since 2005.’ According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database Optimus launched its LTE network on a commercial basis in March 2012; the firm expects to achieve 80% population coverage by end-December 2012.
