National fixed line incumbent Uzbektelecom, which offers wireless and broadband services under the Uzmobile and Uzonline banners respectively, has signed a USD12.4 million contract with Chinese vendor Huawei to supply equipment for the telco’s ‘e-education’ project. C114 reports that Huawei will provide equipment for a fibre-optic network that the telco is currently deploying. Uzbektelecom plans to link 164 educational centres, schools and universities and research organisations. The project was launched in September 2011 and by the end of that year, the company had installed 132.9km of cable, connecting 80 institutions.
