FT's veteran cable ship gutted by fire off Namibia

13 Aug 2012

Last Friday France Telecom (FT) reported that an unexplained fire on one of its cable-laying vessels, The Chamarel, had caused the entire crew to abandon ship off the coast of Namibia. The Chamarel, which had recently been involved in repairing the Sat3/WASC/SAFE submarine cable, had been in service since 1975. The crew of 56 all escaped unharmed. FT stated that it will launch a full investigation as soon as the ship can be recovered.
