Telecom Italia completes new network for Pelagie Islands

2 Aug 2012

Telecom Italia has announced that it has completed work on new telecoms infrastructure on the Pelagie Islands. The network has been designed to avoid the recurring problem of damage to fibre-optic submarine cables, chiefly caused by anchors and the unauthorised use of bottom trawlers. The infrastructure is managed remotely and able to operate in extreme environmental conditions, ensuring network continuity across the archipelago.

The Pelagie Islands are the three small islands of Lampedusa, Linosa, and Lampione, located in the Mediterranean Sea between Malta and Tunisia, south of Sicily. Geographically Lampedusa and Lampione are part of the African continent, but politically and administratively the islands fall within the Sicilian province of Agrigento, and as such represent the southernmost part of Italy.
