National telecom regulator Arcep has implemented an improved number portability (NP) system on the French overseas departments and territories (DOMs) of Reunion and Mayotte. The new regime, which went into operation from 31 July, means that customers wishing to switch service provider but retain their old number, will be able to do so within two working days. Under the old system, end users had to wait up to ten calendar days for the companies involved to effect the change. The approval stage for requests has also been shortened to one working day, as has the time it takes to perform the porting process – in accordance with French telecoms law. Going forward, Arcep intends to introduce the system to the DOMs of Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guyana in September this year, continuing the watchdog’s efforts to harmonise mobile number portability (MNP) under a single scheme in the whole of France.
