Potraz eyes new licensing regime to boost mobile sector

30 Jul 2012

The Zimbabwe Independent newspaper reports that the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (Potraz) is considering changing licensing regulations in order to pave the way for the introduction of new mobile operators. Zimbabwe is currently home to three cellcos, Econet Wireless, Telecel and NetOne. However, Potraz Director General Charles Sibanda told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Media, Information and Communication Technology that the watchdog is not satisfied with some of the pricing and performance of the country’s existing operators. Sibanda indicated that a new licensing regime was in the pipeline, but no further details were given.
