AIS, DTAC mull 3G infrastructure tie-up

Thailand’s two largest mobile operators by subscribers, Advanced Info Service (AIS) and Digital Total Access Communication (DTAC), are in talks over the establishment of a joint tower company for the rollout of a third-generation network utilising the 2100MHz frequency band, reports The Nation. ‘We’re in talks on possible collaboration on the matter with DTAC,’ said AIS chief executive officer Wichian Mektrakarn, adding that the setting up of a joint infrastructure firm with DTAC would be a more technically feasible and cost-effective option for providing 3G services. The two companies have not yet held discussions on the overall expenditure required for the project, however. Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is planning to auction off full 3G mobile network operating licences in the 2100MHz frequency band in October.
