Romania Cable Systems (RCS&RDS), the cableco controlled by enigmatic local tycoon Zoltan Teszari, has reportedly boosted its subscriber base by around 200,000 net new customers in recent months, thanks to a series of regional acquisitions. According to Ziarul Financiar (ZF), the company snapped up Telemach, which is based in Neamt County, Euro Cable (Timis County), Kabex Prodcom (Cluj County) and Bitzone (Dambovita County) during 1H12. ZF notes that none of the transactions were disclosed at the time, in keeping with Teszari’s management style. The owner has not been photographed publicly for over a decade, and refuses face-to-face contact with his fellow shareholders. Prior to assuming control of RCS&RDS, Teszari ran a chain of ice cream kiosks.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, as at end-March 2012 RCS&RDS was Romania’s largest broadband provider by subscribers, with an estimated user base of 1.4 million, equivalent to a 42.7% market share.
