Openreach announces commercial launch of wholesale FTTP products

3 Jul 2012

Openreach, the network arm of British fixed line incumbent BT, has announced the full commercial launch of its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) product range, which the company claims includes some of the fastest wholesale broadband services available in the UK. The full set of wholesale products, which offer downlink speeds from 40Mbps to 330Mbps downstream and 2Mbps to 30Mbps upstream, will, it claims, ‘allow Communications Providers (CPs) to differentiate themselves in the market by offering a wide range of fibre products to suit the needs of small and medium businesses as well as bandwidth-hungry consumers’. Previously the services had only been available to alternative operators on an ‘early market deployment’ basis, but following the launch will now be on offer within the 15 exchange areas where BT has deployed FTTP infrastructure to date. Availability will expand as the telco’s FTTP rollout continues, while it also highlighted plans to make FTTP available ‘on demand’ in areas covered by BT’s fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) rollout. Mike Galvin, Openreach MD for Network Investment, said of this latest development: ‘The commercial launch of FTTP is a major milestone. Whilst we believe that FTTC will provide speeds that are suitable for consumers for some time, these FTTP products will allow CPs to offer SMEs and other bandwidth-hungry users the option of even higher speeds – some of the fastest in the world – and build propositions which help to grow the market for these higher-speed services.’
