Utande launches consumer/SME WiMAX service

22 Jun 2012

Zimbabwean ISP Utande Internet Services, a subsidiary of Dandemutande Investments, has officially launched its WiMAX wireless broadband service for consumers and small businesses in the capital, Harare, under the uMAX brand. uMAX provides internet connections with speeds of up to 1Mbps, with eleven base stations installed across greater Harare, providing coverage of ‘much of the city,’ according to Dandemutande Investments chairman Joe Mutizwa, who added the consumer/SME launch would complement the corporate services that Utande had been offering for 15 years. Mutizwa said that the launch followed a six-month testing phase and a capital investment of over USD17 million for the uMAX rollout. CommsUpdate reported in November 2011 that Alvarion had been contracted by Utande to roll out a WiMAX network based on its ‘4Motion’ product range in Harare.
