MTS selects Ericsson for LTE rollout

22 Jun 2012

Canada’s MTS Allstream has selected Ericsson as an exclusive partner to supply it with an LTE-based 4G mobile network that the Manitoban telco says will be launched commercially by the end of this year. Under the deal – of undisclosed value – Ericsson is providing an LTE radio network and Evolved Packet Core network, as well as policy control and subscriber management systems. The Swedish vendor announced that it will enable MTS to provide LTE to existing HSPA Evolution (HSPA+) customers in Manitoba while ensuring their devices still work in areas where LTE coverage is not present. Mark Henderson, CEO of Ericsson Canada, said: ‘By deploying dual access HSPA Evolution and LTE services, MTS is demonstrating the smooth path operators can take to upgrade their existing infrastructure more effectively. The evolution of existing packet core nodes to Evolved Packet Core will make new capabilities available through software upgrades, minimising the need for operators to deploy and integrate new network equipment.’
