Nextel de Mexico has revealed plans to launch its HSDPA-enabled network nationwide in the third quarter of this year, Reuters reports, citing the operator’s vice-president Gustavo Cantu. Confirming that the cellco was currently offering mobile broadband services in a limited number of regions, the executive noted: ‘We already had ten cities with mobile broadband but we launch (nationwide) in September.’ The report also claims that Nextel has invested around USD6 billion since inaugurating commercial operation in Mexico as an iDEN operator back in 1994, while the deployment of the new network is expected to set the company back around USD1.7 billion.
