NetOne reaches 1.6 million users, but Telecel disputes ‘second-place’ claim

1 Jun 2012

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has reported that state- owned mobile operator NetOne added 144,000 net new subscribers in the first three months of this year to take its total to 1.60 million at the end of March. According to the regulator’s figures, this put NetOne in second place in the market, narrowly ahead of Telecel Zimbabwe, which POTRAZ said lost a net 375,000 cellular customers in the first quarter of 2012 to leave it with around 1.5 million. However, figures reported by Telecel, part of the Orascom division of international group Vimpelcom, differ from those claimed by POTRAZ, both for March 2012 and December 2011. According to Telecel, its number of active subscribers reached 1.833 million at the end of Q1 2012, up from 1.520 million three months earlier.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe maintained its clear lead in the cellular market in March 2012, reporting a total of subscriber base of 6.41 million, up from 5.6 million six months earlier; according to POTRAZ’s reckoning 714,000 net new users joined Econet’s network in January-March 2012.
