MIC mulls introduction of MNP in 2014

28 May 2012

Vietnam’s Department of Telecommunications has called on the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) to implement mobile number portability (MNP), which would enable the country’s wireless subscribers to retain their mobile number if they switch service provider. Viet Nam News cites Deputy Minister Le Nam Thang as saying that the MIC would collect opinions and contributions to build the policy on MNP, which is expected to be applied in 2014. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states that Vietnam was home to approximately 129 million mobile customers at the end of 2011, with market leader Viettel – which is run by the Vietnamese military – accounting for around 32.8% of the total subscriber base.
