DoCoMo to bid for 700MHz mobile data spectrum

24 May 2012

The Japanese cellular market leader NTT DoCoMo has announced plans to bid for wireless spectrum in the 700MHz band which it will utilise for 4G mobile data services. The firm lost out to rival operator Softbank in a bid for 900MHz frequencies earlier this year and has now turned its attention to the lower band. DoCoMo says it will cost around JPY150 billion (USD1.9 billion) to transition its LTE (referred to in Japan as ‘3.9G’) mobile data networks to the 700MHz band.
