BTC launches fibre-optic network, PRISM

21 May 2012

Bermuda Telephone Company (BTC) has unveiled its new fibre-optic network, called PRISM, which it claims will ‘provide both the highest capacity on the island and the end-to-end Quality of Service performance necessary to ensure that one network can deliver a mix of voice, video, mobile, and data traffic along with mission critical business services’. The telco has teamed up with Cisco Systems which is deploying its Carrier Ethernet System, including Cisco ASR 9000 Series equipment to support new and upgraded services on a common IP infrastructure. BTC says the PRISM network will comprise a series of five fibre-optic rings covering the city of Hamilton, and providing high speed data and voice communications services. The carrier’s chief executive officer Lloyd Fray commented: ‘International business is a primary driver of Bermuda’s economy, and reliable communications services play a vital role in that success. Many of the world’s most influential businesses call our shores home … PRISM is not only a secure, reliable platform for Hamilton businesses but also supports those challenged with multiple locations through the island, as the network extends to both the Eastern and Western ends of the island.’
