British mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Tesco Mobile, which offers its services over the network of O2 UK, has announced that its subscriber base has passed the three million milestone. In releasing its preliminary financial results for the 2011/12 financial year, the virtual operator’s parent company, UK supermarket giant Tesco, noted that it had witnessed ‘particularly strong growth in [its] pay-monthly contract business’, while adding that its ’capped contracts’ – which it says are aimed at helping customers on tight budgets manage their costs – had also proved popular. The retailer noted that it now has 240 in-store phone shops, which it said were now profitable, and it plans to open a further 24 this year.
