RAW warns DoT over Huawei dealings

Indian telecoms regulator, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been warned by the nation’s foreign intelligence agency the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) to be cautious in its dealings with Chinese vendor Huawei. According to the Hindustan Times, RAW’s concern centres on Huawei’s relationship with the Chinese armed forces – a connection that has recently troubled Huawei’s operations in the US and Australia. In a missive to the DoT, RAW noted that ‘Huawei Technologies is known to have links with the PLA [People’s Liberation Army] and the ministry of state security of China.’ The intelligence agency warned against the equipment supplier’s strategy of ‘aggressive Indianisation,’ which it believed to be an effort to alter public perception and detract from its security connections.
