Nawras aims to boost broadband connectivity

Nawras, Oman’s second national telecoms operator, plans to focus on improving connectivity around the country this year, in a bid to capitalise on the growing demand for data services. The Muscat Daily cites the operator’s CEO Ross Cormack as saying that Nawras will continue to build a number of base stations across the Sultanate during the year to boost broadband coverage. ‘What we are doing is taking advantage of the best technology to provide ever-upgraded services, but the very first thing is to get connectivity to as many people as we can,’ he told reporters, adding that the company currently covers 57% of Oman with its 3G mobile network, as well as 87% of households with a home broadband service. Cormack also revealed that Nawras will roll out more services for business customers in 2012. ‘Most business customers want to have at the very least connectivity which is protected by diversity, meaning a choice of operators where if one does not work then another one does,’ he said.
