TSTT takes steps to discontinue 1800MHz services at end-May

16 Apr 2012

Telecommunications Services of Trinidad & Tobago (TSTT) says that its remaining customers using mobile phones which only operate in the 1800MHz frequency band will be required to upgrade their handsets as it prepares to deactivate that component of its mobile network on 31 May 2012. As reported by the Trinidad Express, the company said it is required to relinquish this specific frequency to the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad & Tobago. Speaking to the Express, TSTT’s public relations manager, Camille Salandy, said only dual-band mobile phones will be affected while handsets with tri- and quad-band capabilities (most newer phones) will not. To facilitate the tens of thousands of customers who will be impacted, TSTT will conduct a ‘handset swap’ campaign, giving them the opportunity to trade in their older models for compatible ones.
