Softbank leads in net subscriber adds in fiscal 2011

Japan’s third-largest cellular operator Softbank Mobile has been named as the fastest-growing network in the country for the second year in a row. In the fiscal 2011 year (twelve months to 31 March 2012) Softbank added 3.54 million net new users to take its total customer base to 28.95 million. Market leader NTT DoCoMo came in second in terms of net adds, with 2.12 million new users to give it 60.13 million subscribers, while KDDI Corp, which trades under the ‘au’ brand, was just behind with 2.11 million net new customer adds to reach 35.11 million. Fourth-placed operator eMobile has not yet released its end-March subscriber information; it had 3.80 million users at end-December 2011. Previously, Softbank also led in terms of net adds in the 2010 fiscal year, with 3.53 million net new users in twelve months.
