According to a survey by Bitkom, a technology trade association, Germany boasts more than 3,000 LTE base stations covering approximately 13 million households and serving around 150,000 subscribers. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states that all three 800MHz licensees – Vodafone Germany, Telekom Deutschland (TD) and Telefonica Germany (O2) – launched LTE commercially in rural areas of the country that were previously unserved by broadband of any kind, as per the regulator’s requirements, and the trio are now turning their attentions to the deployment of LTE in urban areas: some 300 cities are expected to be covered by LTE by the end of 2012. Bitkom also noted that 3G coverage in Germany now reaches 85% of the population.
