Unicom lines up CNY100bn for 3G expansion

China’s second largest cellcos by subscribers, China Unicom, is reportedly planning to pump some CNY100 billion (USD15.813 billion) into infrastructure construction in 2012. According to C114, Unicom is planning to increase the footprint and capacity of its 3G and broadband networks to meet rising demand for data-use. As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Unicom’s 3G subscriber base more than doubled in 2011, from 14.060 million at end December 2010 to 40.019 million twelve months later. The news outlet cited officials as saying that the company had no financial pressure regarding cash flow or credit.
