Parliament fears illegal networks are ‘mushrooming’

India’s telecoms watchdog, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been criticised by a parliamentary committee for its attitude towards illegal network operations, amidst fears that the practice is ‘mushrooming’. According to the Business Standard, the committee accused the DoT of reproducing ‘known information in a vague manner’ rather than investigating the issue and gathering fresh data. The potentially outdated information supplied by the DoT noted that there were an estimated 500 illegal telecoms networks operating across 16 states, with the greatest numbers in Andhra Pradesh (120) and Tamil Nadu (100). Fearing that the situation may have gotten worse since the DoT collected its data, the committee stressed that illegal network operations present a threat both to national security and the national purse.
