Innovative Telephone, the largest telco by subscribers in the Virgin Islands (US), has announced that it has selected Metaswitch Networks to migrate its legacy voice telephony operations on the islands of St Croix, St John and St Thomas to an all-IP solution. Terry Falls, senior vice president of operations and engineering at Innovative, commented: ‘In 2005 we deployed our first Metaswitch solution in St. Croix. With that positive experience and the company’s stellar reputation in the industry, we selected Metaswitch to migrate our entire legacy network to voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP)’.
Innovative Telephone, which has been providing communications services to the Virgin Islands (US) since 1959, serves both business and residential markets with a full portfolio of services, including local voice telephony, long-distance calling, broadband internet, cable TV and mobile telephony.
The fixed line communications market in the Virgin Islands (US) is regulated by the Public Services Commission (PSC), although the watchdog’s regulatory power does not extend to mobile service providers, which fall under the remit of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, DC. Competition in the Virgin Islands’ wireless sector is provided by locally-owned Choice Wireless, and regional subsidiaries of major US cellcos such as AT&T Mobility, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA.
