NTT’s Xi 4G service hits 2m subs

22 Mar 2012

NTT DoCoMo has announced that its Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G cellular service Xi (pronounced ‘crossy’) hit the two million subscriber milestone on 18 March. The service, which offers mobile downloads at up to 75Mbps, launched in December 2010 and reached the one million customer mark exactly a year later. Subscriber numbers have since doubled in less than two months, propelled by the introduction of the first Xi-compatible smartphones in November 2011, DoCoMo says. The operator is expecting to spur further growth this year with the release of additional Xi-compatible smartphones, tablets and data-communication devices, and mobile Wi-Fi routers, as well as new services, such as Xi Talk 24, which offers free, unlimited voice calls between users with Xi-compatible smartphones.
