The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is seeking to reclaim unused spectrum in the 2.5GHz band from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), NCC executive commissioner Dr Bashir Gwandu told local newspaper THISDAY. ‘Both the 2.5GHz and the 700MHz are in the hands of NBC at present and we have to work to free the bands for efficient use. I do not believe any of such bands are being used efficiently as at today and the country cannot continue to wait,’ Gwandu said. In June 2008 the NCC said it planned to auction spectrum in the 2.5GHz band – held by the NBC – for broadband use, but since then little progress has been made. However, Gwandu revealed the minister of communications technology, Omobola Johnson, is now looking into the issue, and said that the NCC is confident that it will see some positive results on the matter in the near future.
