Number portability to kick off on 30 March

15 Mar 2012

Argentina’s president Cristina Kirchner has said that number portability (NP), which enables a subscriber to retain their telephone number if they switch service provider, will be launched in the country on 30 March, Dow Jones Newswires reports. Last week Argentina’s four mobile network operators – America Movil-owned market leader Claro Argentina, Telecom Personal (the mobile arm of fixed line operator Telecom Argentina), Telefonica Comunicaciones Personales Argentina (Movistar) of Spain, and NII Holding’s Nextel – started testing the NP system ahead of a nationwide launch. The introduction of the service is expected to further intensify competition in a market that boasts a wireless penetration rate of around 140%.
