WiMAX operator Enforta poised to test LTE in Kemerovo?

13 Mar 2012

According to an unconfirmed report by Telecompaper, Russian WiMAX operator Enforta will start to test Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the 3.5GHz band in Kemerovo this spring. Citing comments by chief operating officer Oleg Taynov, the article indicates that the network will utilise equipment from US-based vendor Airspan Networks, the same company that oversaw the buildout of its WiMAX network.

The 3.5GHz spectrum band is an unusual choice for LTE, with the high frequency presenting a number of challenges in terms of range, although it can be used in metropolitan areas. According to its website, Enforta – which has focused its WiMAX deployments on Russia’s regional capitals, as well as the two largest cities, Moscow and St Petersburg – holds spectrum permits in the 2.5GHz, 3.5GHz and 5.2GHz spectrum.
