Softbank gets green light for 900MHz network plan

8 Mar 2012

The Japanese telco Softbank has received approval for its plan to deploy base stations operating in its newly-licensed 900MHz band. The operator is expected to launch its first services in the new band, which will be used to boost mobile internet coverage and capacity, on 25 July, Japan Today reports. Softbank’s 900MHz network deployment plan incorporates the installation of approximately 16,000 base stations in fiscal 2012, which will be expanded to 41,000 by fiscal 2016, providing 99.9% population coverage. Softbank is the third largest of Japan’s mobile operators in terms of subscribers, with just over 28 million subscribers at the end of January 2012, while larger rivals NTT DoCoMo and KDDI had 59.7 million and 34.5 million respectively.
