T-Mobile CR to shut down UMTS-TDD service from 31 May

5 Mar 2012

T-Mobile’s Czech unit has announced that it is shutting down operations of its UMTS-TDD network, offered under the banner ‘Internet 4G’, from 31 May 2012. In a press release the cellco said that having invested a considerable amount of money in the development of UMTS-FDD in the last two years, it has decided to discontinue the older technology. Over the next three months, current Internet 4G subscribers will be encouraged to switch to its faster HSPA+ service – which provides maximum download data rates of 21Mbps, compared to 2Mbps for UMTS-TDD. T-Mobile CR also notes that its faster HSPA+ network is available to 83% of the population and will be further expanded this year, whereas UMTS-TDD coverage is limited to 63%.
