STel to shut down

22 Feb 2012

STel, one of the Indian wireless providers to have its licences revoked by the Supreme Court earlier this month, has confirmed that it plans to shut down its operations. According to the Economic Times, the cellco found that after reviewed the costs of continuing, it was considered unviable. STel has begun contacting its customers encouraging them to use the mobile number portability (MNP) service to port to another provider: once its customers have migrated to other networks, STel will close down. STel’s Bahrain-based former partner, Batelco agreed to sell its stake in the telco to Sky City Foundation for USD174.5 million, though it is understood that the sale has not yet been completed.
