Orange admits over a million defections since launch of Free Mobile

22 Feb 2012

France Telecom-Orange has issued a statement to clarify its position on the impact of competition from France’s fourth cellular network operator, Free Mobile, a new low-cost operation from the Iliad group which launched on 10 January 2012. Orange says it lost a net 201,000 customers between 1 January and 15 February, representing around 0.7% of its total mobile customer base in France, which at 31 December 2011 had reached just over 27 million subscribers. The group said that there were 1.038 million contract terminations over the period, partially offset by 837,000 new signings. Orange says it has seen success with its own low-cost mobile brand Sosh, as well as with its Orange Open quad-play fixed/mobile/internet/TV packages; there were 90,000 Sosh customers and 1.4 million Orange Open subscribers as at 15 February 2012.
