Bharti African operations cross 50m subscriber mark

Bharti Airtel has recorded a 17% year-on-year increase in total revenues for the three-month period ending 31 December 2011 to USD3.649 billion, though net profit fell by 22% over the same period to USD200 million: Airtel attributed the fall in profit to increasing tax and interest payments. The group reported EBITDA of USD1.177 billion for the quarter, up from USD1.112 billion the previous year. Airtel’s African customer base passed the 50 million milestone in Q4 2011, bringing the group’s total subscribers to 243.34 million across 19 countries, with digital TV and African wireless subscriptions recording the greatest year-on-year growth rates, 43% and 21% respectively.
