France Telecom-Orange to double fibre investment this year

2 Feb 2012

France Telecom-Orange is doubling its investment in fibre broadband networks this year to between EUR300 and EUR350 million (USD395 million and USD460 million), Reuters quotes its chief executive Stephane Richard as saying Wednesday. In an address to the French National Assembly, the CEO confirmed his company had ploughed a total of EUR150 million into fibre deployment in FY2011, but the announcement to up CAPEX in this area is welcome news to the French government which has encouraged telcos to roll out high speed broadband networks and which in 2010, committed several billion euros by way of a stimulus fund to achieve this. Since 2008/09 however, domestic carriers have if anything scaled back on fibre projects citing both the high cost and a very long timeline for a return on investment (up to 30-40 years).
