KDDI to launch quadruple-play offer

13 Jan 2012

Japan’s second largest telco by subscribers, KDDI Corp, is launching a low-cost quadruple-play offer on 16 January, The Nikkei daily reports. The paper quotes KDDI president Takashi Tanaka as saying that his company is the only Japanese provider able to offer a package that bundles fixed and mobile voice and data communications with TV (cable) and a WiMAX wireless broadband option. Tanaka notes that the former monopoly NTT is currently prohibited from offering its own combined fixed and mobile option, while third-placed Softbank Corp has stepped away from actively marketing its fibre-optic service at the retail level. The Nikkei also reports that KDDI is slashing the cost of some of its smartphones to ‘virtually zero’ to compete with rivals in the domestic market.
