Conatel updates on progress of telecoms tax fund for education

12 Jan 2012

Haitian ICT regulator, Conseil National des Telecommunications (Conatel), has released an update on its participation in the country’s National Fund for Education (FNE), which uses a special tax on international phone calls to subsidise sending disadvantaged children to school. Local news source Defend.ht quotes the watchdog as saying that between 16 June and 30 November 2011 it collected USD13.117 million for the FNE from incoming calls connected by the largest and second-biggest cellular operators, Digicel and Comcel (Voila). This revenue will be transferred by Conatel to the Treasury, once relevant authorities request it, the regulator added. Going forward, Conatel said it intends to publish periodic updates on the tax collection.
