Viva full LTE launch by April

11 Jan 2012

Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reports that Viva Bahrain – which launched a small-scale Long Term Evolution (LTE) network for users of the Bahrain City Centre leisure complex in Manama at the start of this month – will launch a full commercial 4G mobile broadband service by March or April. Viva staff at the City Centre sales outlet explained to BNA that the company, a subsidiary of Saudi Telecom Company (STC), had begun a marketing campaign for LTE, and as part of the programme the ‘showcase’ network was intended to familiarise the Bahraini public with the 4G technology in advance of its commercial launch. Mobile internet speeds experienced on the network reached around 85Mbps to 99Mbps, BNA was told. The volume of people using the LTE facilities was about 40-50 per day on weekdays, increasing at weekends, staff disclosed.
