French equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent has been selected by Saudi Telecom Company (STC) to deploy its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in eleven cities in the Northern Region of the Kingdom. Dr. Zeyad Al-Etaibi, CTO of the STC Group, commented: ‘STC is committed to delivering innovative services to its subscribers and together with Alcatel-Lucent we are confident we will enrich our customers’ lives by offering a variety of services for consumers and businesses’. Alca-Lu has also confirmed that the deal with STC includes managed services at all cell sites rolled out across the cities involved.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, September 2011 saw STC, Mobily and Zain Saudi Arabia all inaugurate LTE services within the space of 24 hours, with all three operators staking a claim to be the first cellco in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to launch a commercial LTE network.
