Movistar shuts down CDMA network

3 Jan 2012

Telefonica subsidiary Movistar Ecuador announced the closure of its CDMA2000 1x mobile network on 31 December 2011, as previously scheduled, in order to focus on its GSM/W-CDMA/HSPA services instead. Existing CDMA handset users were offered a discount on the purchase of a new GSM phone, the Samsung E1086, up until the switch-off date. In an announcement dated 23 December, Movistar said that the remaining CDMA device owners accounted for only around 0.4% of its customer base, and that the switch would allow the operator to concentrate on development of services and applications on more popular platforms such as GSM and HSPA+.
