Polish telco Polkomtel, which offers its wireless services under the Plus brand, has expanded the footprint of its 3G network using frequency in the 900MHz band. Finish vendors Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) installed a 900MHz band refarming solution to supplement the cellco’s existing 2.1GHz services. In addition, NSN deployed 500 Long Term Evolution-ready (LTE-ready) Flexi Multiradio base stations. The network upgrade increases Polkomtel’s indoor coverage and overall footprint, as well as improving the network’s capacity to meet rising demand for data services and pave the way for a future transition to LTE. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of September 2011 Polkomtel served 2.85 million 3G customers, compared to two million in the same period of the previous year and one million twelve months before that.
