DoCoMo to invest USD11bn in 4G, LTE smartphones

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo will invest a total of JPY880 billion (USD11 billion) in the rollout of Long Term Evolution (LTE) network infrastructure in the country by the end of fiscal 2015, and will offer its first LTE smartphones this winter, Reuters quotes the cellco’s president and CEO Ryuji Yamada, as saying. The official was speaking at a mobile conference in Hong Kong. The carrier, Japan’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, had previously announced its intention to have signed up 30 million LTE users by fiscal 2015. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database DoCoMo had a total of 388,600 LTE subscribers at the end of September this year, up from 121,000 in June. It launched the Xi-branded 4G network in December 2010.
