11 Nov 2011

China Unicom and French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent have unveiled plans to expand the Chinese telco’s fibre-optic network in 29 provinces. Alca-Lu will deploy its gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) platform, enabling Unicom to offer subscribers potential download speeds of up to 100Mbps. The expansion intends to meet the increasing demand for capacity-intensive applications such as video-on-demand, gaming and social networking.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of June 2011 China Unicom had 52.322 million broadband subscribers, representing 37.4% of the market.
