Cofeco designates Telcel, Movistar and Iusacell as dominant in mobile calls completion

The Mexican antitrust authority, the Comision Federal de Competencia (Cofeco), has reportedly concluded that the local mobile subsidiaries of Latin American telecom giant America Movil (AM) and Spanish group Telefonica, as well as third-placed cellco Iusacell, are dominant in the market for completing mobile voice calls. According to Bloomberg, the competition watchdog’s ruling opens up the possibility of tighter regulation being applied to the trio by the Comision Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Cofetel), with the decision by Cofeco concluding a probe that took more than three years, following a preliminary ruling of dominance against all three back in 2008. The latest development comes despite reports earlier this month that a Mexico City judge had ordered Cofeco to void the 2008 resolution declaring that Telecel, Movistar Mexico and Iusacell had dominant power over interconnection and were potentially anti-competitive.
