No outside interest in Greek 900MHz/1800MHz auction

24 Oct 2011

The Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT) has announced that the country’s three incumbent mobile network operators – Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind Hellas – have applied to take part in the upcoming auction of frequencies in the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands. No other parties registered interest in the sale, scheduled for mid-November. In its 2011 budget, the Greek Ministry of Finance accounted for an amount of at least EUR300 million (USD417 million) to be raised via the auction, as part of wider efforts to raise state funds for massive debt repayments. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that previously, the EETT ruled that a pair of 2×10MHz GSM-900 licences held by Vodafone and Wind and expiring in September 2012 would be subject to an open auction process and not simply reissued.
