KDDI has posted net income of JPY68.2 billion for its second fiscal quarter ending 30 September, up 4.8% year-on-year. Operating income meanwhile rose 6.8% to JPY126.7 billion on the back of a 3% gain in revenues to JPY878.3 billion. The results were partly boosted by growth in handset sales, with the operator starting to sell the Apple iPhone 4S earlier this month. KDDI has revised upwards its full-year sales target of four million smartphones to more than five million for the year ending 31 March 2012. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, KDDI claimed a 27.5% share of Japan’s wireless subscriber market at the end of June, and an 8% share of the country’s retail broadband subscribers.
