According to French regulator Arcep, only nine of country’s 25 WiMAX licence holders have fulfilled their coverage obligations. Although 100% of promised base stations have been deployed in Ille-et-Vilaine and 96% in Deux-Sevres counties, elsewhere build-out is at least 50% below target, reports the watchdog, quoted by Telecompaper. Rollout has yet to start in Auvergne, Centre, Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Rhone Alpes, while Corsica, Charent and Poitou-Charentes also lack any WiMAX coverage. SFR’s subsidiary Societe Haut Debit (SHD) has built out 23% of the 210 base stations it pledged to deploy in the Paris region, while NomoTech’s rollout is at 18% in Moribhan; Axione has reached 92% in Limousin. As reported earlier this month by CommsUpdate, Bollore Telecom was reportedly threatened with losing twelve regional WiMAX licences as it had only deployed 200 base stations out of thousands promised.
