TMCnet reports that as part of a joint venture (JV) project, Singaporean fixed and mobile operator M1 Limited (M1) and Verizon Communications have completed a fibre-optic expansion project in northern and western parts of Singapore. As a result of the rollout, the operator’s fibre-optic ring in the region now extends to 160km and has increased network coverage and doubled capacity for M1’s enterprise customers. The JV has deployed advanced optical technology to meet growing customer bandwidth requirements in the city state and will provide speeds of 40Gbps to 100Gbps to support future market growth. Furthermore, it is understood that six additional data centers can now be accessed by Verizon, following the project. Commenting on the upgrade, Yali Liu, executive director of global network planning at Verizon, said: ‘A strategic gateway between Europe and Asia has been created due to Singapore’s geographic location for our global customers. The expansion benefits our global and regional customers. We can meet the current and future needs of customers by combining the additional capacity, access to network facilities, advanced optical network technology, and future bandwidth scalability.’
